SEIU Nevada Provides Recommendations to Improve
the State Whistle Blower Laws

Joan Wells, RN testified in front of the Legislative Committee on Health Care on May 5, 2008 with recommendations on how to improve the current state whistle blower laws and protections for healthcare professionals in Nevada.

Wells has experienced first hand the ill effects of the current, porous legislation when she was fired from UHS Valley Hospital for speaking out against unsafe practices that put patients in danger and her case was thrown out of district court.

Healthcare Providers React to Endoscopy Clinic Crisis

SEIU Nevada members have worked hard to raise healthcare standards statewide. With the recent Endoscopy Clinic crisis, we know that as a state and community, we can do more to build higher standards.

We need to create safe, and enforceable staffing ratios, because fully and appropriately staffed healthcare facilities are the best way to ensure frontline workers are able to be effective advocates for their patients.

We need whistleblower protections to ensure every frontline healthcare professional can speak out for safe, quality patient care.

New Report Shows How Many People Are
Likely to Die in Nevada Due to Lack of Coverage

More than five people die each week in Nevada because they don’t have health insurance, says a new report by Families USA, the national organization for health care consumers. As health care costs continue to skyrocket, the human cost for the uninsured is even higher.

Uninsured adults are more likely to be diagnosed with a disease in an advanced stage. For example, uninsured women are substantially more likely to be diagnosed with advanced stage breast cancer than women with private insurance.

Krystal Delmonico, RN St. Rose Hospital said,“As a nurse, I have witnessed the heart wrenching choices Nevadans face when their children, partners, parents or family members are sick, but they have no insurance. It is time for our nation to guarantee affordable health care coverage for all Americans. Piecemeal reform is not a solution.”
